For those of a certain age, this book will whisk you back to an era when sex, drugs and rock and roll were still uncharted islands. If you are a young person looking for a real sense of what it must have been like back then. Well, this is a great starter pack. It has sex, plenty of drugs, and lots of rock and roll. You can tell Bibi is a book written by someone who was on the 1960's Kings Road scene. Mim must have been living it large, wearing the gear, going to the parties, pulling the birds, and probably privy to slices of underworld gossip. The book is well written, and the story is easy to follow, but, my only moan is, there is too much time and space dedicated to describing drug taking, which I feel, holds up the pace and the excitement of the story. Still a great read.

A very enjoyable read. Although I am just a bit younger than the time of the story, I always had an interest in and got a strong vibe of the times. Reading this hit me like a ton of bricks. It transported me to a geographical place I find familiar yet have never been, but always wanted to go to. Worth a read if you have any interest in the happenings in England, Africa, Tangiers or Morocco in the 60's. An entirely different world. Vivid and imaginative
writing from Scala.

THE LUCKIEST MAN IN THE WORLD
AMAZON READER REVIEW I couldn't put it down and as everyone before me has said it ended far too quickly, although my Irish husband ,who knows of the story was waiting for me to finish so he could get started. Should have bought 2 copies. This would make a fabulous mini series and I am reccomending it to all my friends for their Summer reading list. Looking forward to reading "Diary of a Teddy Boy" already ordered!! Mim Scala is a name to remember. Keep writing , Mim ,we can't get enough! Amazon reader review Why couldn't this have been 100 pages longer?! The adventures of the author's Grandfather make for a thrilling ride. It's reads like a dream of being a lottery winner, or at least holding a winning ticket that everybody knows about ;-). (Ever woken up in real life in a fury because you didn't sleep with the million dollar lady in your dream because you're married in real life?). The different worlds our hero, or some might say antihero, enters during this yarn are mesmerising. From the streets of Fulham with the Italian immigrants to the open space of Aintree racecourse, to the pleasure dens of the west end of London with the worlds most beautiful and elite, Mim Scala makes the transitions seamless, believable and exciting. Some of his descriptive turns are fabulous and draw you right into the scene. OK, loosely based on fact the author states, but it is quite clear that it is the author who must have the ankle fetish. A great story. A great read. |

I am only part way through, having made the mistake of having an eager peek inside when the postman delivered it. Eight chapters later and eight un-returned phone calls too, the curse of the drinking classes dragged me back to my desk. Can barely wait to get back to finish it into the night. If Mim turns this into a screenplay it will knock Downton Abbey into a cocked hat... Yet his writing is so evocative I'd fear someone else's interpretation could hardly match reading it for oneself. A ripping yarn written from the heart and first-hand experience. If your have ever enjoyed even the smallest flutter (whether of the wallet or the eye) or even an Italian meal, you could not get better value anywhere else than in these pages: So go for it. |
